Hold up, what does Nat mean when she talks about something being mascara (a slight visual highlight) rather than being a full dominant print that shouldn't be matched, only enhanced by a colour or used as a fabulous print clash?
 

Let's begin looking at the example below. These ivory pants have a double black line (dominant) and a middle white stripe (mascara).

How can you tell the difference? 

The black T-shirt looks as though you are trying to match the dominant stripe with your tee = old-fashioned. 

And it falls flat.

Whereas the white T-shirt looks fresh and appears to be non-repeating to the white mascara middle stripe, like you aren't trying to match = so stylish.

The outfit feels fresher, lighter, and much more modern.

 

          


Then there are the no-shadow-of-a-doubt strong print items that want a direct print clash in black-and-white print as well, but at a different scale.

One of my favourite choices is a lace-up shoe or sneaker.

The laces create a vertical line that naturally draws the eye upwards, making your feet and ankles appear longer and slimmer.

This helps balance the width of the jeans and stops the fabric from looking heavy or overwhelming.

Make sure you add a feminine handbag when wearing your sneakers with your jeans. 
 

An ankle boot with a heel is another fantastic option.

The heel adds height and visually lengthens your leg line, while the boot gives your wide-leg jeans a polished, intentional finish. 

Any handbag will work when wearing heeled boots with jeans; just make sure the colour doesn't match your boots.

How To Style Crochet

A crochet or lace top is technically a self-print, which means it's already bringing texture, pattern, and interest to your outfit before you've even added anything else.

This is exactly why crochet loves a good print clash. Try styling it with a printed skirt or a pair of printed pants. The crochet acts like a floral pattern, allowing it to happily mingle with other florals, geometrics, and its very favourite partner, stripes.

The result? An outfit with personality. An outfit that gets people asking, "How did you think to put that together?"

One of my favourite Make It Look Easy formulas is to remember that texture behaves like a print. 

A little print clash can take crochet from pretty to unforgettable.

One of the reasons I love denim so much (apart from being born in denim as a Hair colour type) is that every shade of denim naturally works with every other shade of denim.

That's exactly why I keep all my denim pieces, jeans, jackets, shirts, skirts, and shorts hanging together in one section of my wardrobe. It makes creating outfits incredibly easy.

The secret isn't whether you can wear double denim...

It's how much contrast you create between the two pieces.

If you love making a statement, pair a light denim with a dark denim. The higher contrast creates a bold, confident look that's especially flattering on my Vibrant and Eyes colour types, or women with theatrical style personalities.
 

If your style is softer, more relaxed, or understated, keep your denim pieces closer in colour.

A medium wash jacket with medium wash jeans, or a dark denim jacket with dark jeans, creates a low to medium contrast that feels subtle and easy to wear.

One of my favourite Make It Look Easy formulas is that shorter blazers tend to enjoy the company of skirts and dresses, while longer blazers generally work with all silhouette lines.

Why?

Because a shorter blazer allows you to see more of the skirt, creating a lovely balance of a more streamlined silhouette.

Now, before anyone emails me back, this is Nat's science, not the fashion police's rules. 

If you want to wear a short blazer with jeans, go right ahead. I promise a piano will not fall from the sky and land on your head.
 

These formulas simply make getting dressed easier because they help create proportional balance and harmony without having to think too hard about it.
