How to Create a Cohesive Wardrobe Colour Palette

The Colours You Need In Your Wardrobe (And Why Capsule Wardrobes Don't Always Work)

We all know that life is simpler when you stick to a colour palette for your wardrobe.

The question is, which colours should you choose?

Maybe you've thought about building a minimalist or capsule wardrobe with those monochrome or tonal palettes.

So why isn’t everyone building a capsule wardrobe?

The reason is simple: some skin tones or colour types intuitively crave colour. They feel better when they wear more hues.

This is why some neutral palettes don’t feel quite right. Like something's missing. So we end up feeling bored, buying more clothes, thinking this will solve the problem. It won’t, but you already know that otherwise, we both wouldn't be here today, and there would be less waste in the world.

If you feel like you need more colour in your wardrobe, then you're in luck. That's exactly what we'll cover here.

Over the years of trying to build a capsule wardrobe for myself and my clients, I've learned that there are a few reasons why a capsule wardrobe doesn't work for everyone.

1) capsule wardrobes sound simple, but they can get complicated — usually, you’ll need a capsule wardrobe for different seasons, for work and play, etc.

2) the wardrobe colours that you choose should work best on your skin tone. Remember, some colour types crave colour!

Luckily, I found a solution for us — thanks to decades of studying skin tones and colour theory.

Ready?

There are only four colours you need in your wardrobe — and they’re all your best neutrals.

  • Your best light neutral
  • Your best dark neutral
  • Your best eye neutral
  • Your best skin neutral

All of your best neutrals pair well and work in harmony with your skin undertone, give you the right amount of contrast, and bring out your eye colour.

These neutrals give you a sophisticated and cohesive palette that complements your natural features, effortlessly.

Remember the LDCP formula and how using it makes putting together an outfit easy?

Knowing your four best neutrals makes LDCP even simpler, so you can save your brain space for more important things.

Once you have these, you can even add two extra accent colours to give you more options that you can mix and match with ease.

With the right colours, they can all work together, and with Coco, it's even easier to wear these colours with other items in your wardrobe.

Here's how to do it using your Brilliant Colour Combinations e-book (a.k.a. Coco).
  • Simply choose your base colour page from the Brilliant Colour Combinations ebook (Use the mood board you're drawn to/suits you the most).
  • From that page, choose four base colours that will serve as your neutral.
  • Then add two accent colours that you love. (This step is optional.)
Bonus points if you already have these colours in your wardrobe!

This will help you narrow it down further.

Plan a week's outfit using this colour palette, and see how much easier it is to get dressed.
